chosen album name

I have chosen out of the spider diagram the album name 'Flourescent heart' which i thought appealed the the chosen genre of indie pop. I got the inspiration form Florence and the machines album 'Lungs' i thought of body parts and then added a word which i think best describes my chosen song and artist.

analysis of album covers

Genre- Although the band do not feature anywhere on the album the name of the band is on the front cover, showing the audience exactly who the album is by. Underneath it again clearly states the name of the album. There is also a parental advisory sticker, because as a rock band we expect swearing. On the back the tracklist is shown, in which the audience can see the songs featured, with also extra information about the record label.

Lettering- The lettering is in white and red, in which it looks slightly teared and messy which could connot their music, giving the rock feel to it , red connotes danger, showing that this album could be violent.

Image- The image on the front of the album is of a hand holding a grenade, again brings back the connotations of danger, the grenade is also in the shape of a heart, in which its bleeding, which shows that the album could represent heartbreak and suffering. It also gives that war feel, where the songs featured (wake me up when September ends, homecoming and boulevard of broken dreams) are about going to war and not being with loved ones for a while.

Stars/icons- I did expect Green Days album to be like this as steretypically rock bands are not featured on their own album cover. With 6 albums before American Idiot, and one after, a total of 7 albums shows they are hardworking, dedicated but also shows they have grown up a lot, so I think this album and 21 Century Breakdown in particular show a different side to the band. They are very different to most band especially rock bands, as they express views about politics and the world. They are also not trying to be style icons, they care about their music, but they show a dark scary side, which some people enjoy.

Representation- I'd say that Green Day are percieved in a bad light especially because they are a rock band and they dont get as much attention/credit than genre's such as pop and R&B, but also because their songs represent violence and rebellion, and their video's are even worse showing drug use, violence and suicide attempts.

Audience- Green day appeal to teenagers of about 15-19, mainly boys, but with ballads also appeal to girls, their songs are not sexist and express views in which both genders are interested in. I think the audience's primary purpose for buying the album would be because they can relate to the songs, and then also because they enjoy them.

Lily Allen album covers

Genre- The CD cover has the artist name on it, which immediately shows the audience who the album is by, if not already recognising from the picture. The name of the album is also clearly shown. On the front of the album there should be a parental advisory sticker, warning the audience that some songs do contain swearing and also a sticker with the price on. The front cover doesnt give anymore information, in which the audience will look at the back, to see the tracklist, and other information such as the record company (for this particular one is Regal) including the barcode.

Lettering- The writing on the front cover is in black and pink, which represents she's fun and girly but also has a dark side, which could relate to the songs on the album. The writing of the album name, looks like a girls handwriting connoting it could be Lily's handwriting. The L in the middle of the cover represents the first letter of Lily's name, the L is big and bold again representing her personality.

Image- The picture on the cover is of Lily laying on the letter L with her feet in the air, she is not looking at the camera, she has her eyes closed, like the album could represent her dreams. The lighting is quite dim, which again can connote her dark side. Overall the album cover is quite peaceful and calm, which may appeal to the audience. Lily is wearing a pink dress which again works well with the black lettering and a black netted hat, which makes her look very authentic and old fashioned. I think people will get different perspectives on the album, because it represents a dark saide but also a sweet soft side to the artist.

Stars/icons- I didnt expect to see Lily's album cover like this, because she is usually percieved as quite rebellious and iconic for her dress sense, but this album is the exact opposite to the way people really see her, which means this album could connote she has grown up and is changing her ways. Although she definately shows the audience she is a solo singer, independant and being herself, she is not manufactured like most solo artists e.g. Rihanna, Lady Gaga. When people hear the name Lily Allen, they think of swearing, chavvy dresses, jewellery and trainers.

Representation- I think the stereotype of Lily Allen is seen as a negative connotation towards the audience she targets, because of the swearing and some of the idea's for her video's e.g. beating her boyfriend up, kidnapping an Elton John lookalike, ect. Lily Allen talks a lot about relationships in her songs, and does show men in a bad light, which reinforces the stereotypes that most women make.

Audience- Lily Allen appeals to an audience of a young age, mainly girls because of the way she represents boys in her songs, because she is presenting a fashion not many people try (dresses with trainers) which has made her a fashion icon. I think most people would buy the CD because of pleasure and entertainment, many of her songs are funny for example 'Alfie' and 'Knock Em Out' but also because they can relate to the lyrics.
